Information:
Bernie Hammond earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from York University in
1975, specializing in medical sociology. In the same year, he began
teaching sociology at King's University College and in the sociology
department at
the University of Western Ontario. His special interests in
sociology include the sociology of health and illness and disability
studies. Since his arrival at King's University College, he has been
interested in
promoting educational efforts around the issues of development, justice
and peace. He founded the
Centre for Social Concern
in 1982. Funded by the college and in keeping with the mission of
King's as a Catholic institution, the centre promotes awareness of
social justice issues and involvement in social activism on the part of
King's students and other members of the community. In 2002, he
began to coordinate the Social Justice and Peace Studies program at
King's. He looks forward to seeing this program make a
significant contribution to the excellent educational opportunities
available at the college. He is confident that the program will
better equip students to act as agents of positive social change and
engage them in a lifelong passion to create a more just and peaceful
world.
