The following list was compiled in June 2003 in order to allow students to see some of the possible post-graduate scholarship possibilities resulting from a degree in Social Justice and Peace Studies (SJPS).  Since this list was created some of the scholarship opportunities or scholarship information may have changed so be sure that you investigate any updates.  Whenever possible information about the following organizations have been taken directly from their source.  If you experience trouble with any of the following information or you know of a scholarship that should be added to this list then please email the web administrator at: sjpsweb@uwo.ca  This list is by no means exhaustive and we would appreciate your suggestions.

Broke Scholar Scholarships

Description:  This is a general scholarship database for Canadians and Americans.  The application only takes a few minutes and then the database will list the relevant scholarships.  They claim to have over 900,000 scholarships worth over $3 Billion.

Destination Education

Description:  A database of a number of scholarships offered to Canadian students that would like to travel abroad for their education (some of these scholarships offer as high as $50,000 in scholarships for each year of study).  This database also has a list of agencies that offer international internships, international experiential education opportunities and language learning programs.

FastWeb Scholarships

Description:  A database of possible scholarships totalling $1 Billion – Complete an online questionnaire and a number of eligible scholarships will be recommended.  This is an excellent way to begin a scholarship search.

Rotary World Peace Scholars
Two-year master's-level degree programs in conflict resolution, peace studies,
and international relations

Rotary International:  Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

Scholarship Information: The Rotary Centers for International Studies program is a major educational priority of the Rotary Foundation and a bold and critical step in the Foundation's commitment to world peace, goodwill, and understanding. The Rotary Centers will provide future leaders with opportunities to study the root causes of conflict, theories of international relations, and effective models of cooperation. Beyond academics, Rotary Scholars will gain practical tools in conflict resolution for use in their chosen careers.  The Rotary World Peace Scholarship supports the Rotary World Peace Scholar for a two-year master's-level degree program at one of the Rotary Centers for International Studies. Scholarships cover a 21-month period. This period includes two academic years as well as the three-month summer break between academic-year periods. Scholars are encouraged to pursue degree-related activities during their summer breaks, such as internships, volunteer work, and research.

Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund - For Activist Students
One-year (max $6,000 USD) scholarships for graduate or undergraduate students enrolled in
the United States (although they do not need to be US citizens)

Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund:  Since 1961, the Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund has provided need-based grants to student activists who are able to do academic work at the college level and are involved in building the movement for social and economic justice.

        Early recipients of the Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund fought for civil rights, against McCarthyism and to stop the war in Vietnam.  More recently, grantees have been active in the struggle against racism, sexism, homophobia and other forms of oppression; building the movement for economic justice; and creating peace through international, anti-imperialist solidarity. The maximum grant is $6,000 and may be considerably smaller depending on the applicant's circumstances and the amount of funding available. Although US citizenship is not a consideration, applicants must live in the United States and plan to enrol in an accredited program in the US in order to qualify. There is a strong preference for grantees who plan to stay in the United States and build the progressive movement here.  If you have any questions then email them to the below address.

Rotary Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships
Up to $25,000USD for studies in a foreign country (One Year)

Rotary International:  Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

Scholarship Information:   Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships provide funding for one academic year of study in another country. This award is intended to help cover round-trip transportation, tuition, fees, room and board expenses, and some educational supplies up to US$25,000 or its equivalent. Academic-Year Scholarships are the most common type of scholarship offered; nearly 1,000 were awarded for study in 2001-02.

Rotary Multi-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships
Up to $12,000USD a year for degree related studies in a
foreign country (two to three years)

Rotary International:  Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

Scholarship Information:  Multi-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships are for either two or three years of degree-oriented study in another country. A flat grant of US$12,500 or its equivalent is provided per year to be applied toward the costs of a degree program. Multi-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships are offered mainly by Rotary districts in Japan and Korea; over 100 were awarded for study in 2001-02.

Rotary Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarships
Up to $19,000USD for three to six months of foreign language study and
cultural immersion (many languages offered)

Rotary International:  Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

Scholarship Information: Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarships are for either three or six months of intensive language study and cultural immersion in another country and provide funds to cover round-trip transportation, language training expenses, and homestay living arrangements up to US$12,000 and US$19,000, respectively. Applications are considered for candidates interested in studying Arabic, English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, and Swedish.

Canadian International Scholarship Program
Impressive scholarships for Canadians wishing to study abroad or
foreign students wishing to study in Canada

Canadian International Scholarship Program: There are a number of Post-Graduate scholarships offered to Canadian students wishing to study abroad or to foreign students wishing to study in Canada through the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.  Some of the countries include are Cameroon, Fiji, India, Malaysia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Trinidad & Tobago, Uganda, United Kingdom and many more.

Scholarship Information:  Most scholarships include tuition, activity fees, living expenses, airfare and books.  Some scholarships include personal maintenance allowances, marriage allowances, dependent allowances and in country travel expenses and more.

General Eligibility Requirements:

For Canadians Studying Abroad:

  • Must meet the citizenship requirements of the awarding country: Canadian citizens are eligible to apply for all programs. Permanent residents of Canada may apply in some cases;
  • Open only to permanent residents of Canada who are graduates of a Canadian university. Permanent residents of the awarding country are not eligible;
  • Should have a minimum standard of "A-" to be considered for an award. Please note that normally only first class candidates are nominated;
  • NOTE - Eligibility requirements may change for each of the different countries where scholarships are offered.
For Foreign Citizens Studying in Canada:
  • Scholarships are only tenable in Canadian universities;
  • Students already in Canada may apply; however, anyone who has obtained Canadian citizenship or applied for permanent residency in Canada shall not be eligible for an award;
  • Student must hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree from a recognized university or some equivalent qualification;
  • Preference will be given to those who have obtained a university degree within the last five years;
  • All applicants must have sufficient knowledge of either of Canada's official languages, English or French
