| Description: Film is one of the
most powerful forces shaping our images of the world. In the course,
we will view and analyze several films from a number of countries.
Each film will illumine one or another of the many forms of social
(in)justice in our world. |

Social Justice
and Peace Studies 271b, Special Topics in Social Justice and
Peace Studies: Religion, Social
Justice and Liberation |

| Description: Historically, religion
has, and continues both to signal and to alleviate multiple forms of
social injustice. However, it is also true that religion has, at
times, also aggravated, even created some of these forms. The course
will examine both outcomes, with a view to discriminating between
authentic and inauthentic forms of religion. |

Social Justice and
Peace Studies 273a, Special Topics in Social Justice and Peace
Studies: Art and the Social Conscience |
| Description: From time
immemorial humanity has employed art not only to depict the physical
and social world, but as a form of social and political commentary
and as an instrument to promote social change and sometimes even
revolution. This course will examine the role that art has
played historically and is playing currently as a catalyst in
addressing and ameliorating issues of human suffering, injustice and
war, and in promoting peace. |
