Volunteer & Internship Opportunities

Volunteer & internship experiences present the opportunity to bridge theory and reality. These international experiences contextualize course material. Service to others opens the doors to growth at the individual, community and global level, fostering the realization of connectivity to others and our planet beyond our consumer based connections.

Students participating in international volunteer experiences lasting less than one month, accompanied by appropriate research and written work, may earn a 1/2 course credit. Students participating in international volunteer experiences exceeding one month, accompanied by appropriate research and written work,  may earn one full course credit. For further details please contact Dr. Bernie Hammond, Coordinator, Social Justice and Peace Studies Program bhammond@uwo.ca.

This is certainly not an exhaustive list; any suggestions for additions can be emailed to sjpsweb@uwo.ca for consideration.

Mission Statement: Frontier College is a Canada-wide, volunteer-based, literacy organization. We teach people to read and write and we nurture an environment favorable to lifelong learning. Volunteers also help recent immigrants to Canada improve their English, encourage young children and their families to read together, and work side-by-side with migrant farm workers during the day and tutor them in English and literacy at night. In addition, Frontier College works with a large number of partner agencies for which we provide training and resource support.

RayJon Share Care of Sarnia inc.

Mission Statement: An ecumenical Canadian charity for development and aid to Haiti, Dominican Republic and other developing countries

Opportunities:
Integrated Community Development Project - The project aims to assist communities, especially women, to organize themselves to access resources more effectively and to develop the skills needed to analyze, plan, implement and evaluate their actions for improving their situation. Priority is given to Education, Health Care and Community Development. The project is located in a 60 sq. mile mountainous area southeast of St. Marc with a population of 30,000

Eyeglass Program - The eyeglass Program was developed in response to a need for vision care identified in the countries visited as part of other Rayjon programs. The purpose of the program is to provide vision correction to those unable to afford or obtain either the examination or the eyeglasses they need. The program has two components; the collection of used eyeglasses in Canada and their preparation for redistribution in the developing countries; and the assembly of a team of volunteers to conduct clinics in host countries; performing eye examinations, distributing eyeglasses and making referrals for secondary care.

Work Trip Program - The work trip program evolved from a desire of previous Awareness Trip participants to develop a greater understanding of conditions and culture through "hands-on" experience working alongside community members as equals and learning from each other. Local community leaders select and manage the projects. The Rayjon team provides both skilled and unskilled labour together with a significant portion of the materials and supplies. The community and Rayjon members learn from each other as they work along side each other. 1-2 weeks in duration.

Urban Development Project - The Urban Development Program, developed by The Sisters of St. Joseph of Toronto, is a family oriented program with a strong emphasis on community development and ownership. The Sisters of St. Joseph recognize the unique problems and opportunities of an inner city location and the need to involve local agencies in the improvement of hopeless situations. Many families live on the street and most are single parent families. The overall program consists of three components: The Nutrition Program, The Women’s Commerce Program and The Family Support Program

Awareness Trip – Destinations are normally to the Carribean island of Hispanola (Haiti and Dominican Republic). Both are easily accessible. Awareness trips are generally 7-10 days duration. You will visit several locations and participate in a range of activities. First time travelers are encouraged to visit the Dominican Republic first, since the experience in this country is less demanding than it is in Haiti. Regardless of country visited the experience is likely to be one of the most challenging and meaningful weeks of your life

Mission Statement: The Volunteer Missionary Movement (VMM) is an international community of Christians, with its origins in the Catholic tradition. We proclaim the Good News by sharing our lives, resources and skills, and thus challenge oppressive and unjust structures and promote equality, respect and dignity for all. We are committed to international justice and “the transformation of all things in Christ.”
(Phil. 3:21; Eph. 1:10, 22; 2:21, 4:14)

Volunteering:  VMM-USA missioners are involved in service-oriented ministries in Central America, the United States or Africa. Typically the term of service is two years. VMM missioners enter into a special relationship with the people they serve, one which values and respects their dignity… a relationship which recognizes that God was there, at work, long before the missioner arrived. It is a relationship built upon shared faith and experiences, an exchange of culture and ideas. It is a relationship in which the missioner receives as much or more than is given.

Mission Statement:
Human Rights Watch is dedicated to protecting the human rights of people around the world.  We stand with victims and activists to prevent discrimination, to uphold political freedom, to protect people from inhumane conduct in wartime, and to bring offenders to justice.  We investigate and expose human rights violations and hold abusers accountable.  We challenge governments and those who hold power to end abusive practices and respect international human rights law.  We enlist the public and the international community to support the cause of human rights for all.

Internships:  Graduate interns monitor human rights developments in various countries, draft reports on human rights conditions, and engage in advocacy efforts aimed at curtailing human rights violations.  Undergraduate internships are primarily administrative and clerical in nature, but other projects can be assigned as they arise and match the student's interests and abilities, including research, drafting documents, translating, and helping researchers prepare for missions. Internships are generally unpaid, although work study funds are available. Academic credit can usually be arranged, as HRW internships offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the HRW staff, interaction with other U.S. and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures and special events relating to human rights.  For more information and to learn how to apply see the internship webpage below.
